Pride of the North East

Newcastle is a very popular city located in the North East of England. It has a very dedicated local following. Locals are known as Geordies and most prefer to remain in the city where they were born rather than migrate to any of the larger cities in England such as Manchester or London.

The city traces its roots back to Roman times and owes its name to the castle built in 1080 by William the Conqueror’s son, but it is most famous for its contribution to ship building. In the 16th century it was one of the most famous shipbuilding and ship repair yards in the world.

Unfortunately during the 20th century this industry was in decline but more recently the city has recovered well and is now a thriving commercial city.

Tyne Bridge and Quayside

The most famous landmark in Newcastle is the Tyne Bridge over the River Tyne and was built in 1928 and opened by King George V. It still remains a remarkable sight that crosses the vast Tyne River onto Gateshead and can be seen from miles away.  

There is also a very popular and picturesque area called the Quayside that is modern and hosts a recently built Gateshead Millenium bridge and an impressive Arts Centre.  

Eating Delights

There are a wide variety of restaurants in the town including Italian, Indian, Japanese and French but the largest non-UK theme is to be found in the Chinese Village on Stowell street which has an abundance of very good quality Cantonese and Schezun menus to suit all tastes.

Big-name Shops and Boutiques

Newcastle is home to several of the largest shopping centres in the UK. The largest being the Eldon Square Shopping Centre in the City Centre with big name chain stores such as Debenhams and John Lewis.

The main shopping street, Northumberland Street, is one of the most expensive outside of London and includes designer label stores and boutique outlets.

An Evening of Fun and Dancing

One thing the Geordies are famous for is their ability to enjoy themselves and have a great night out. It has been placed in the top 3 places in the UK for its nightlife so be prepared for a lively evening. Most bars and clubs are to be found in the Quayside area of the city centre and around the Bigg Market.

One of the largest venues is The Gate in the town centre with a huge complex of bars, restaurants, nightclubs and a 12 screen cinema.
