Largest City in the Middle of England

Nottingham is a large city, which is geographically located in the centre of England in an area also known as the Midlands. In earlier years it was a major contributor to the Industrial Revolution specializing in the production of textiles and tobacco.

It is the second largest city in the area and although it is set amongst the green countryside of Derbyshire it still maintains its history for large and imposing buildings many of which have been converted into retail outlets, bars and hotels from former warehouses and factories.

It has excellent transport links with its own airport and more unusually has its own tram network.

Modern and Gothic Architecture

Nottingham has some wonderful venues for leisure in addition to a world famous Test Cricket Ground.  

The National Ice Centre hosts one of the countries best Ice Hockey teams whilst also providing facilities for the casual ice skater. There are several large screen cinema complexes and a number of covered shopping centres for you to explore no matter what the weather.

Nottingham castle is worth a visit and it is located to the South of the city near the university buildings, the most striking of which is the Nottingham Trent building which has an unforgettable Gothic exterior dating back to the previous century.

The older buildings are stunning in design and another example of fine architecture can be found at the Theatre Royal on Theatre Square which also has a striking exterior which dates back to the 1860s when Victorian buildings were commonplace in the city.  

Music is in the Air

The city is a hive of music and artistic entertainment including two very large theatres, several museums and plenty of art galleries. The Nottingham Royal Concert Hall has a capacity of 2,500 and the Nottingham Arena has a capacity of nearly 10,000.

The Nottingham Contemporary and Independent Cinema complexes have each been regularly voted the best in the UK by a popular film magazine.

As for live music one would struggle to find a better venue than the Capital FM Arena or Rock City both of which play host to international artists all year round.

Shopping is the middle name in Nottingham

The centre of Nottingham is where you will find the Old Market Square which is one of the largest city squares in the UK and consists of the Nottingham Council buildings inside which the Exchange Arcade dominates the ground floor. It is an up-market shopping centre and two huge statues of lions which guard the entrance.

In 2010 the city was ranked in the top 6 shopping centres in the UK.
