Cappadocia... A wonderland where nature has made its very own work of art... A special and unique place where history and nature have lived in harmony for thousands of years; where the pattern of the land is felt in every single square metre. Its name is derived from the word 'Katpatuka' , which means 'The Land of Beautiful Horses' in ancient Persian. Here, you will be surprised by nature's incredible artistic talent, and no doubt fall under a spell in the mystic depths of history. The story of the fairy chimneys, a wonder of nature, dates back millions of years. As a result of volcanic eruptions in Mt. Erciyes and Mt. Hasan, (two active volcanoes in Pre-geologic ages) their lava spread over a wide plateau and formed varying layers of tufa on land, lakes and rivers. The plateau that had been formed from main volcanic eruptions continued to change due to smaller and weaker eruptions which followed. Water from many rivers, primarily from Kızılırmak, lakes, rain water from the valley slopes and tough winds eroded the tufa layer for millions of years, which consequently formed the fairy chimneys and valleys, and Cappadocia region that you find today. The fairy chimneys of Cappadocia are high rocks with a hat, a cone and a column or in the shape of a mushroom. Fairy chimneys are seen mostly in the valleys situated in the triangle of Ürgüp-Uçhisar-Avanos, in the area between Ürgüp and Şahinefendi, around Çat town of Nevşehir, in Kayseri Soğanlı valley and in the vicinity of Aksaray Selimiye village. This region, which covers Uçhisar, Göreme, Avanos, Ürgüp, Derinkuyu, Kaymaklı, and Ihlara area, has hosted many civilizations during history and experienced many changes not only naturally but also culturally and socially. Cappadocia today embraces a globally unique social, historical, cultural and geographical wealth. In this unique territory, which has been the settlement point for many civilizations such as Hittites, Cimmerians, Phrygians, Romans, and Byzantines, there are many 'under-cities' carved into the rocks as well as 365 rock churches established at a height of 1100 meters. There are around 150-200 of these under-cities in the region and in many different sizes which make them some of the most interesting examples of cultural wealth. Most were built by humans manually carving down deep into the soft tufa. As the region had been the target of various attacks in the past, these cities were built for security purposes for people to take refuge in living during times of danger. Underground cities are amazingly also connected to nearly every house in the area by hidden passages.
