The Structure of the City in Schwerin
Schwerin is made up of 18 urban districts which then divide further into municipal areas. It has currently been decided to reduce them to 17.
The garden city was once the most Eastern district of Schwerin and due to the expansion of the city, it now lies almost centrally within the city. The district was founded as an agricultural space, which was then handed over to Schwerin after the First World War. New residential space was supposed to be created for the workers but its implementation was at a standstill. After the Second World War, a military barracks was erected by the Soviet occupation and which then stood empty after the fall of the Wall. It was only after its demolition in the year 2002, that new living space was built, which is ideal for young families.
The district of Friedrichsthal lies to the West of the city border of Schwerin. After the fall of the Wall, a lot of money was also invested here to ensure that the inhabitants of Schwerin would not flee from the city. At first, various residential areas were built and which were later extended to includethe necessary infrastructure such as Kindergarten and supermarkets.
